Overview

Professional Security Officers provide protection to their employers. They protect property from illegal entry, vandalism, theft, and fire.

In the aftermath of 9/11, security has truly become a top priority. Places that already employed security Officers, such as boat docks, religious buildings, public housing, amusement parks, train yards, shopping malls, schools, and public buildings, increased their number of Officers.

Places that didn't have security began to employ security personnel. The phrase "better safe than sorry" suddenly rang truer than it ever did before.

Security Officers' duties vary with the size, type, and location of their employer. Some security Officers patrol and inspect buildings and grounds. They check to see that windows, doors, and gates are locked. They also make sure that security equipment is working correctly. In stores, Officers watch for theft by customers. In banks, Officers watch for robbers. Some Officers drive armored vehicles to transport money or valuables safely to and from banks. Other Officers are responsible for driving and providing protection to their employers.

In offices and factories, Officers check employee identification and answer visitor questions. At airports, they may use screening equipment to detect the presence of guns or other illegal items. Other Officers patrol places of entertainment, such as nightclubs. They walk around and watch customers for signs of fighting. They warn customers when they are being too rowdy. Sometimes Officers must evict customers; occasionally they may use force.

Security Officers often keep in radio contact with other Officers. Officers patrol on foot, cars, boats, or on horseback. Some Officers use computers to store security information. They also write reports of what happened during their rounds or changes that they noticed. In emergencies, security Officers investigate alarms. They call the police or fire departments when necessary.

Officers who work at night may adjust air conditioning or heating controls in buildings. They may also answer telephone calls, take messages, and provide information during non-business hours.

Company Profile

Current training for private security officers is minimal, inconsistent, and sometimes non-existent. It’s often left in the hands of security contractors who want to keep costs to a minimum and put officers on the job quickly because of high turnover rates.

Many security officers report that they don’t receive training, or that training is very superficial. Often, more experienced officers are asked to train new hires during work hours. And when officers are transferred to new buildings, they’re not trained on the new building’s specific emergency procedures.

There is little oversight to enforce existing state requirements around training. When training is provided, it varies widely – from company to company and building to building. This inconsistency results in a lack of preparedness and a lack of accountability to clients, building tenants, and the public at large.

National CSI is pleased to be one of the first security academy's in the national to offer SORA training in New Jersey.  SORA or the “Security Officer Registration Act” mandates sweeping changes in the private security industry.  The most significant of these is the requirement that all currently employed and future security officers complete a twenty-four hour training course by July 1, 2007.

The course includes instruction in Homeland Security, Incident Command System, Report Writing, Use of Force, Theft Prevention, Cultural Diversity, Ethics, The Professional Security Officer, Criminal Street Gangs and Certification in First Aid and CPR.

We are pleased to have a host of state certified law enforcement officers from around the state to teach this course.  This course is being offered at a cost of $250 per person.  Additional fees to the State of New Jersey apply and are not included in the price.
